University of Lagos Alumni Mourns Loss of Veteran Journalist, Tunde Awobiyi
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Mr. Isaac Ayotunde Awobiyi, a distinguished alumnus and former editor of Sunday Times. Awobiyi, fondly known as Tunde, also made significant contributions to the alumni association, serving as its National Publicity Secretary.
His demise was formally announced in a statement released on Wednesday by the association’s current Publicity Secretary, Funmi Falobi, and disseminated through the alumni body’s social media platforms. The statement, issued on behalf of the President Worldwide, the National Executive Council, and the Board of Trustees of the UNILAG Alumni Association, conveyed the collective grief of the organization.
Awobiyi was a highly respected figure in Nigerian journalism, recognized as a veteran journalist and a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. His career also saw him serve as the acting Chief Press Secretary to Bola Tinubu during his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State.
The esteemed journalist passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 28, 2025, following a brief illness. He was 74 years old at the time of his death.
A Legacy Rooted in Academics and Journalism
Born in Ilesa, Osun State, Tunde Awobiyi’s academic journey began at the University of Lagos, where he graduated with a degree in Mass Communication in 1978. His engagement with the university extended beyond his studies; he served as the Public Relations Officer for the University of Lagos Students’ Union during the 1975/76 academic session. This early leadership experience foreshadowed his later impactful roles within the UNILAG Alumni Association, where he served as National Publicity Secretary.
Awobiyi’s distinguished career in journalism commenced at The PUNCH Newspapers, where he held the position of Assistant Features Editor. He subsequently transitioned to the Daily Times of Nigeria, a pivotal move that saw him ascend to the prestigious role of Editor of Sunday Times. His dedication and expertise propelled him further within the organization, ultimately reaching the position of General Manager, Publications, for Daily Times.
Beyond his journalistic endeavors, Awobiyi also contributed his skills to the public service sector. He had a notable career in the Ministry of Information within the Lagos State Civil Service, where he steadily advanced to the directorate cadre. A significant achievement during this period was his role as the founding Editor of “Alausa Alert.” His public service acumen was further recognized by his appointment as a one-time acting Chief Press Secretary to President Bola Tinubu during his governorship of Lagos State.
Contributions to Professional Bodies
The late Awobiyi’s commitment to his profession extended to his involvement with the Nigerian Guild of Editors. He played a crucial role in the Guild’s activities, notably clinching the secretary position at the biennial conference held in Sokoto. He diligently served two mandatory terms in this capacity, working alongside Mallam Garba Shehu, who was the President of the Guild during that period.
The UNILAG Alumni Association highlighted Awobiyi’s exceptional qualities as a professional. He was described as a consummate individual endowed with sterling administrative leadership and exceptional human resource management skills. His ability to foster strong relationships was a hallmark of his personality, as he was known for his adeptness at making friends and cultivating robust contacts both domestically and internationally.
Family and Survivors
Tunde Awobiyi leaves behind a loving family who will deeply miss his presence. He is survived by:
- His wife, Mrs. Ruth Awobiyi, a retired principal of Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba, Lagos.
- Three sons: Tolulope, Babajide, and Oladipupo.
- A daughter, Mrs. Oluseyi Osobu.
- Numerous grandchildren.
The passing of Tunde Awobiyi marks the loss of a significant figure in Nigerian journalism and a dedicated alumnus whose contributions will be remembered by the University of Lagos community and the broader professional landscape.
