Crans-Montana Fire: Victims Identified as Investigations into Tragic New Year’s Eve Blaze Intensify
Swiss authorities have confirmed the identification of the first four victims of a devastating fire that ripped through a popular bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort on New Year’s Eve. The deceased include two 16-year-olds, an 18-year-old, and a 21-year-old. Their bodies have now been released to their grieving families. The painstaking process of identifying the remaining victims, both injured and deceased, is ongoing, with officials withholding further details at this time.
The blaze at “Le Constellation” bar tragically transformed a festive New Year’s Eve celebration into one of Switzerland’s most horrific recent tragedies. Preliminary findings suggest the fire was likely ignited by sparklers being used within champagne bottles, according to officials who spoke on Friday afternoon. The sheer scale of the incident is underscored by the fact that, out of 119 individuals who sustained injuries, 113 have been formally identified. This acknowledgement highlights the prolonged agony for families still awaiting news about their missing loved ones.
“Our absolute priority today is identification, to allow families to commence their grieving process,” stated Beatrice Pilloud, the attorney general for the Valais region. The prolonged uncertainty is taking a significant toll. Elvira Venturella, an Italian psychologist assisting the families, described the wait as “destructive to people’s stability.” She added, “The longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to accept the uncertainty, the lack of information.”
The desperate search for loved ones continues. Laetitia Brodard, from Lausanne, shared her anguish with reporters: “I’m looking everywhere. My son’s body is somewhere.” She expressed a profound need to locate her child, stating, “I want to know where my child is and be by his side. Wherever that may be, be it in the intensive care unit or the morgue.” Brodard recounted her last communication with her son, a New Year’s message shortly after midnight wishing her a happy new year and professing his love, to which she reciprocated.
The severity of the burns sustained by many victims has complicated the identification process for both the injured and the deceased. Families have been asked to provide DNA samples to assist authorities. Compounding the tragedy, identification documents and wallets were, in some cases, completely destroyed by the inferno. An Instagram account has become a focal point for sharing photographs of those unaccounted for, with friends and relatives imploring for any information regarding their whereabouts.
International Support Mobilised for Seriously Injured Victims
In parallel with the ongoing identification efforts, international assistance is being coordinated for the most critically injured victims. Following the New Year’s Eve disaster, four patients were promptly transferred to hospitals in Germany, with an additional seven expected to follow, as announced by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) on Friday evening.
According to the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Protection, a total of 50 injured individuals are slated for transfer to hospitals abroad by Sunday. Beyond Germany, medical facilities in France, Italy, and Belgium are also preparing to receive patients. Many of these individuals face prolonged and arduous recovery periods. Some victims have suffered burns covering over 70% of their body surface, while a significant number have also experienced severe lung damage due to smoke inhalation. The medical prognosis for some patients indicates the need for a substantial number of surgical procedures, with plans for operations approximately every other day.
Scrutiny Over Fire Safety and Bar’s Design Mounts
As the focus remains on the care of the fire’s victims, criticism regarding the bar’s fire safety measures and structural design is intensifying. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic and dangerous crush on a narrow staircase that served as the primary escape route from the basement to the ground floor as patrons attempted to flee the Le Constellation bar.
A 31-year-old bartender, who previously worked at the Crans-Montana establishment, reported that the bar had only one combined entrance and exit, alongside a single emergency exit. He claimed this emergency exit was consistently obstructed during his tenure. This crucial escape route was reportedly located in a separate room designated as a smoking area. “Everyone in the town knew that this would go wrong at some point,” the former employee told the German newspaper Bild, highlighting a perceived lack of concern for safety.
Fire safety experts Peter Wilkinson and Edwin Galea have pointed to the potential role of sound-absorbing polyurethane foam on the ceiling, which likely ignited during the fire. This material is known for its high flammability and its tendency to emit dense, toxic smoke, which can drastically reduce the time available for escape.
The public prosecutor’s office in Valais, led by attorney general Beatrice Pilloud, is meticulously examining various aspects of the incident. These include investigations into any structural conversions, the types of materials used in the construction and decor, the bar’s operating licences, the implemented safety precautions, and the adequacy of escape and evacuation routes.
Furthermore, investigators are exploring the possibility of legal repercussions for any survivors present at the time of the fire. Photographic and video evidence has emerged showing patrons with fireworks ignited inside champagne bottles, which, based on initial findings, may have been the catalyst for the ceiling foam igniting. Pilloud indicated that potential charges could include negligent arson or involuntary manslaughter, though she stressed that no definitive evidence supporting these charges has been found to date.
